National Cave Conservancies Forum
In April, TKC members attended the first ever National Cave Conservancies Forum in Lewisburg, West Virginia. The forum is a national meeting to promote education and interaction among
cave and karst based conservancies in the United States. The purpose of this forum is to improve and maintain institutional knowledge among all cave and karst conservancies and to make
sure good ideas and sound methods stay in circulation. The forum was held in West Virginia's Greenbrier Valley, a karst region of national significance that holds many of the worlds
longest cave systems.
The West Virginia Cave Conservancy and the Northeastern Cave
Conservancy worked together to organize the forum and the
event was co-sponsored by the National Cave and Karst Management
Symposium.
Jeff Bray, President of the West Virginia Cave Conservancy,
said, "This forum intends to encourage interaction between
members of the various (conservancies) so they can discuss
the issues that are truly affecting them." Twenty One Conservancies
from around the country were represented and some of the topics
included: Conservation Easement Essentials, Constructing Management
Plans, Managing and Protecting Biological Resources, The Value
of Delineating Recharge Areas for Critical Caves, and Managed
Access to Conservancy Caves and Lands.
