Karst Aquifer
This is a photo from Briar Cave in Central Florida. The cave makes a direct connection to the Floridan Aquifer, one of the most productive aquifers in the world.
In most aquifers, water moves very slowly through sand, gravel, or the fractures in rock. The small openings act as a filter removing pollutants and contaminates. Karst aquifers differ significantly from more common granular aquifers. Water in karst aquifers moves through large conduits (caves) much like a sewer system. Water moves very quickly through these aquifers and receives very little filtration.
