Dye Trace
Dye-tracing is a tool researchers use to determine the underground path water takes in karst regions. Harmless dye is injected into sinking streams and dye traps are placed at
springs where the researchers believe the dye will reappear. The dye can be detected using activated carbon or by visual inspection.
The green dye in this photo was injected into a wet weather stream in West Virginia that flows into a large sinkhole known as Deels Hole. Deels Hole is located in a dry karst valley
in which all of the drainage is underground. The dye reappeared several days later in a spring one mile down the valley from the injection site.
