Message:	If you are concerned with environmental issues and protection of natural resources here is a great way to help out. The Karst Conservancy is a nonprofit organization that conserves karst land across the country to protect water supplies and endangered habitat. Membership is free, and by joining you'll receive e-mail updates and information about tools to help you support conservation efforts in karst areas. Karst is best described as a region characterized by sinkholes, underground streams, and caverns. Karst areas are typically devoid of surface water as all the water is diverted through underground channels. Surface water in karst areas flows into caves and sinkholes very quickly, receiving very little filtration. This water, and the impurities it carries - human and animal waste, pesticides, fertilizers, petroleum products, and other pollutants - often travel great distances underground, contaminating wells, springs, and aquifers. Large areas of the country have this type geology and 73 million Americans get their drinking water from karst aquifers. The Karst Conservancy protects these areas by directly acquiring them or by working with landowners to place conservation easements on them.
