1) Geomorphology from Space - Florida Karst From Above
Geomorphology from Space is an out of print 1986 NASA publication edited by Nicholas M. Short, Sr. and Robert W. Blair, Jr. designed for use by the remote sensing science and educational communities to study landforms and landscapes. The core of this book is a gallery of space imagery consisting of 237 plates, each treating a geographic region where a particular landform theme is exemplified. Commentary, photographs, locator maps, and sometimes a geologic map accompany each plate. Karst/Lakes is one of the main categories on this site and the link below discusses Florida karst. The main site is located at:
http://daac.gsfc.nasa.gov/DAAC_DOCS/geomorphology/GEO_HOME_PAGE.html
The Florida photos are at: http://daac.gsfc.nasa.gov/DAAC_DOCS/geomorphology/GEO_7/GEO_PLATE_KL-4.HTML
Florida is a carbonate plateau with limestones in the region comprising one of the best aquifer systems in the world. Florida karst is characterized by the abundance of depressions, many filled with water, and a lack of well-developed surface drainage. West-central Florida is shown in a Landsat photo, in the Central or Mid-Peninsular Zone (geomorphic division of White, 1970).

2) Sinkhole Disasters and Quotes from the Press
Karst geography is by definition unstable. Sinkholes can form in unexpected areas, in particular where ground excavation occurs and where there is a change in the groundwater flow rate. There are lots of stories about sinkholes opening in karst regions around the country. This article gives an over view of some of the more publicized collapse events including lawsuits, destroyed buildings and cars, and failed dams.

3) Karst terrains and associated environmental concerns, karst in the Black Hills???
There are three main regions that contain some of the most important karst areas in the US but when you think of them you would not immediately think of South Dakota. Karst terrain encircles the interior of the Black Hills and which is due to relatively soluble limestone formations. Jewel and Wind caves occur in these same limestone formations. Text and photos at:

4) Alabama sinkholes and karstlands
The state of Alabama is second in the nation for its number of caves and sinkholes. Sinkholes beneath a railroad yard south of Birmingham, Alabama in 2000 is located at: http://www.gsa.state.al.us/gsa/sinkholes/sinkholes.html . The Tell Me More link has a good graphic of carbonate rock outcrops in the state.

5) The 2005 National Cave and Karst Management Symposium to be held Oct. 31 to November 4 in Albany, New York
The 2005 National Cave and Karst Management Symposium to be held Oct. 31 to November 4 in Albany, New York, marks 30 years since the first Symposium was held in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Hosted by The Northeastern Cave Conservancy, Inc., the Symposium will showcase both the accomplishments of decades of cooperative cave and karst management research, and the path towards the future. An exceptional selection of session organizers will preside over an informative and dynamic week that will be valuable to cave and karst managers everywhere.
