5) For an impressive example of karst topography take a look at this portion of a topographical Map in an Indiana karst area.  On this map, each contour line represents 10 feet (3 meters).

6) California caves? Yes! In California these caves form in limestone and marble, both forms of calcite.

2) Dozens of sinkholes have opened up in north central Florida after three days of heavy rain from Hurricane Frances, including one that swallowed a Chrysler LeBaron as a man parked to get breakfast at a grocery store.

3) After 16 months of negotiations, The Mid-Atlantic Karst Conservancy has leased 4,000 acres of property and 30 (formerly closed) caves in western Pennsylvania. The new preserve will be known as the Trout Run Woods Preserve.

4) Westcave Preserve is a natural treasure of the Texas Hill Country, possessing unique and majestic beauty and ecological diversity. The site has national significance as an integral component of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife's desired Balcones Canyonland Preserve system, and has been nationally recognized as one of the region's premier sites for viewing the endangered golden-cheeked warbler.  It was privately held in the 1960's and 1970's, and was a favorite spot for picnickers and trespassers who damaged the site with heavy foot traffic, littering, and by damaging fragile flora and breaking the cave's stalagmites and stalactites. 5) See this topographic map of Mitchell, Indiana for a idea of how karst terrain might look on a topographical map.  Most or all of the sinkholes shown on the map are direct entrance points of freshwater to aquifers and other ground water features such as caves and perched water tables.
